Home charging vs public charging

What matters is the price of the energy you actually charge, not the cheapest tariff in an advert.

Use energy shares

A short public top-up and an almost-full home charge are not equal shares. Divide home-charged kWh by total charged kWh to estimate your home share. 240 kWh at home and 60 kWh in public means 80% at home.

An example, not a price promise

With €0.30/kWh at home and €0.59/kWh in public, that blend is €0.358/kWh. At 20 kWh of billed energy per 100 km, it costs €7.16. All-home charging would cost €6.00 and all-public €11.80. These are worked examples, not current tariffs.

Standing charges and solar energy

A household standing charge you already pay is not automatically an additional car cost. A subscription purchased specifically for charging is relevant: spread it across your expected charged energy. Solar electricity is not necessarily free either. Use an assumption relevant to your comparison, such as export revenue you would otherwise receive.

No home charger?

Set the home share to 0% and enter the average price of public chargers you can realistically use. The result may favour petrol. Check additional time and parking charges separately.
